Obsolete system

This refers to the editorial, “let’s rethink reservations” (September 24). Caste-based reservations have become an easy route for politicians to ascend to power, and for the beneficiaries to reach the top echelons of Government departments, by compromising the merit of their counterparts belonging to un-reserved category.

It is time the Government considers quotas as a social relic from an egalitarian point of view. It should look for an evidence-based approach to affirmative action that includes multiple dimensions of disadvantages and is not limited to caste. There is a need to dismantle the obsolete caste-based structure of society.
