Nothing wrong if retired soldiers join politics

This refers to the article, “General who spells trouble for the BJP” (March 5) by Ashok K Mehta. Former Chief of Army Staff General VK Singh is a civilian now, with a distinguished track record of being competent, honest and efficient. So there is nothing wrong if he has joined a political party. He was as free to undertake any social activity. Gen Singh is in fact exactly what India needs in its political system.

The US and Israel had and have several former soldiers in important positions of power. A number of US Presidents have been in the Army and have seen combat. So, there is no reason as to why retired soldiers of India should not join politics. In fact, if politicians had to do a stint in the Armed Forces, they would be in a better position to understand the grievances of the soldiers. Our political parties can benefit from the presence of former defence personnel in their ranks.
