North-East sidelined

Published on:

Sir — This refers to the article, “It’s almost like they don’t exist” (October 21) by KG Suresh. Successive Governments in New Delhi have failed the North-East States at every juncture. This is especially true of the Congress which has ruled the country for the longest period of time. It is also true of Congress-supported and Congress-led regimes.

Forget about having daily flights from metros to the region; it’s traumatising to know that we don’t even have railroad connectivity to some of the State Capitals of the North-East region.

Every now and then, students from these States are harassed in the national Capital, but no stringent punishment is meted out to the offenders. It’s probably because the number of MPs these States elect to Parliament is too small to make any considerable impact on the national stage. The North-East is not just part of India. It’s also crucial to our integrity and sovereignty. We cannot ignore it.
