Normal monsoon is the only hope

Published on:

This refers to the article, “Robust monsoon the only palliative” (June 21) by Kota Sriraj. The writer’s suggestion for our country to strategise plans to enable normal monsoons, though welcome and desirable, represent an uphill task. Environmental problems in the sub-continent stem from a exploding population and political mismanagement. Poverty, inequality, and half-hearted efforts for substantive development have left no hope for a frog-leap economic growth. Clouds of political upheavals and social discord are currently looming large. This is a bad omen for the nation. Add to this the the fact that most campaigns have failed to increase awareness amongst the public so far. In the situation, how can we just stop using fossil fuels without developing a viable alternate energy solutionIJ Without this, there will definitely be an economic fallout.

Natural phenomenons such as monsoons are beyond our control. In this situation, the best we can do is to make a massive effort to cut down on our pollution levels and start using methods like rainwater harvesting and the sand-bore technique to save water. These steps can make a marginal change in terms of receiving a more favourable monsoon. Increased public awareness and support will also improve the dire situation we are in right now .
