No water-tight case against Salman Khan

Published on:

This refers to the report, “Car did it, not Salman” (December 11). The Bombay High Court’s reversal of actor Salman Khan’s conviction in the hit-and-run case by a trial court is a sagacious decision, based on hard evidence. The prosecution failed to convince the court, beyond reasonable doubt, of the actor's guilt. The acquittal points to lax investigation procedures, as a result of which a water-tight case against Khan could not be put together.

Also, the case has taken 13 years to reach this stage and seeds of suspicion have already been sown in the public perception. This reveals the ugly side of our justice system. Khan’s celebrity status added grist for the rumour mill — a person like him can afford high-profile lawyers. By the same token, celebrity cases are also subject to much greater scrutiny. There’s little space for foul play. Finally, this case is quite possibly moving to the Supreme Court, so the last word here has not yet been spoken.
