Sir — This refers to the article, “Aamir, you’ve hurt India” (November 25) by Chandan Mitra. The remedy provided by actor Aamir Khan’s wife — to leave the country — is based on impulse, and no real remedy at all.
As an actor who holds enlightened ideas and expresses them in his works, Mr Khan cannot escape from the epic battle between secularism and sectarianism. He has to fight the battle here in India, because the country has given him so much love and affection.
Obviously, Mr Khan has the wherewithal to leave the country in search of greater security, but he cannot leave his compatriots, who cannot afford a day’s meal. Hence, he should be willing to fight shoulder-to-shoulder with the secular forces, in defence of India’s continued existence as a pluralist democracy.
