No religion is above the Constitution

This refers to the article, “Constitution's mockery in the name of religion” (November 8) by A Surya Prakash. The author has validly condemned the Muslim clergy and its pseudo-secular cohorts for campaigning against the law Commission's academic-type questionnaire on personal family laws of different communities in order to have a “healthy conversation” about the viability of a common civil code, as required under Article 44 of the Constitution. Clearly, the intention is not to impose but to know the people's views on “harmonising various cultural practices”.

How is it that reforms in Christian and Hindu family laws can be discussed and introduced, but cannot be done vis-à-vis the Muslim communityIJ Are Indian Muslims above the ConstitutionIJ That too at a time when educated and enlightened Muslim women have gone to the courts against tripletalaq. Can a progressive society accept that its large segment continue to pursue primitive practices of gender inequalityIJ
