Sir— This refers to the editorial, “President RN KovindIJ” (June 21). The President of India is expected to be one of international fame, possessing diplomatic qualities, with conversational skills, enjoying good rapport with world leaders with also being conversant with the ground realities of the country. In the beginning we had ideal Presidents such as Rajendra Prasad and Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. However, the case of incumbent President, Pranab Mukherjee, is an exception whose high calibre is a rarity. Still, it is caste and not merit that has captured the attention of parties on both sides. As a repartee to the BJP, the Congress led Opposition also has chosen a matching caste candidate to give a fight to Ram Nath Kovind.
Judging the matter on merit and in a broader perspective, it is Subramanian Swamy who deserves to become the Indian President.
