This refers to the editorial, “Film piracy serious threat” (January 7). The editorial is a telling comment on the abysmal plight of the film-viewing scenario, both in India and abroad alike. Pirated versions of films are being watched online and this is an open secret. Copyright laws in this regard have not been efficacious. The reason behind this is that the film industry is making fast bucks in profit, despite piracy being rampant all over. This is why, an umbrella coalition known as the Alliance Against Copyright Theft, was formed. However, it is no more functional now, due to a lack of interest.
With the world's largest video streaming company, Netflix, making a foray in India, a silver lining has emerged on the firmament of the Indian film industry. Hopefully, Netflix will capitalise on its experience it has had in Australia, revolutionise the industry and help raise the number of viewers by adopting legal pay-per-view services and drop the chances of film piracy.
