Needless survey

Published on:
Sir — The Intensive Household Survey that the Telangana Government ordered a few days ago, and which brought the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad to a grinding halt, was unnecessary.
The existing rules were more than adequate to weed out bogus ration cards and give assured benefit of state welfare measures to the needy.  The enumeration exercise has ended up creating a sense of fear among the people.
Also, let us not forget that when States such as Jharkhand, Uttarakhand and Chhattisgarh were created, no Chief Minister conducted such a survey to identify people according to their ethnicity. So, the step undertaken by the K Chandrashekar Rao Government was an exercise in futility.
Moreover, the Constitution of India allows every citizen to settle down in any part of the country. The ethnic enumeration has also been a significant burden on the public exchequer.
