Needless hype

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Modi scores a big six” (June 7).

One feels that the ‘Modi hysteria’ is hugely overstated. Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi may be a good administrator and politician, but to say that every other leader in the NDA needs his help or else they go nowhere, is stretching the argument a bit too much.

Surely, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar is quite capable of winning on his own steam and without the help of Mr Modi. One defeat in Maharajganj does not mean a trend. Similarly, six wins for Mr Modi does not mean a trend either. Because it is also a fact that Mr Modi has not been effective outside Gujarat till now, a fact which his spin doctors consciously avoid mentioning.

Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Karnataka have all gone to the Congress in spite of the Gujarat strongman campaigning there and the scam-ridden record of the incumbent UPA regime. If the Congress prepares well at the grassroots level for 2014 and if it goes ahead with its legislative and executive agenda, the party will still win in 2014.
