At a time when steps should have been taken to make banking available on all seven days of the week, the Union Government has taken a step in the reverse direction by making second and fourth Saturdays bank holidays.
The logic is beyond understanding and seems to be a forced compromise when banks will be open on the first and the third Saturdays, unlike the Government-system where offices are closed on all Saturdays under the five-day week system.
Bank employees should rather be given two holidays per week to be at par with Government employees. But it can be done while having banking on all the seven days of the week by giving rotational two weekly holidays to bank employees. Banks can remain open every Saturday and Sunday but only offer essential banking-services through a limited number of employees on these two days. Clearing operations then should be on all seven days of the week.
