Needless cacophony

Sir— This refers to the report, “Tiger should give way to cow: HC” (June 1). Forget the comments of the Rajasthan High Court judge; the cow has been revered in Indian culture for various reasons. In the age of yore, the cow was the backbone of rural life and economy. Male calves grown up as bulls tilled the fields and also drove bullock carts. Cow milk was prescribed to newborns and aged alike.

The Kerala High Court has refused to intervene on the Union Government’s notification banning sale of farm animals for slaughter at cattle markets, saying that the new rule neither bans cattle slaughter nor violates the constitutional right of the people to eat beef. Obviously, the noises made over the order were misplaced and overtly done.
