Need of hour is to bring parliamentary reforms

Published on:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his Friday speech in the lok Sabha, talked of some drawbacks in the system. He said that the nation had been unnecessarily dragged into a costly mid-term poll because of the controversial vote of former Chief Minister of Odisha Giridhar Gamang against former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. This, even as Mr Gamang had not resigned from the lok Sabha even after taking oath as Chief Minister. This calls for immediate reform measures so that a parliamentarian may automatically lose his/her membership on taking oath as a Minister or as a Chief Minister of a State, and vice versa. likewise, a person may not be allowed to contest from more than one constituency. Rather, a parliamentarian must resign from his/her earlier seat before filing a nomination for the other.

However, Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Sitaram Yechury has rightly objected to the creation of a Constitution Day, which may in the near future lead to the announcement of yet another public holiday.
