Natural disasters hit poor the hardest

Published on:

While it is impossible to prevent the occurrence of natural calamities, they can surely be tackled and the extent of damage can be minimised. Unlike an earthquake, a cyclonic storm is predictable and gives enough time for evacuation before it strikes. It is unfortunate that Chennai and its adjoining districts are repeatedly becoming victims of nature’s fury. For those living in the safety zone, away from cyclone-prone areas, the scenes of devastation may look dramatic. But those who are caught in the high-velocity winds, go through an unforgettable ordeal.

Obviously, the weaker sections who live precariously, are more vulnerable to disasters. In the present case of Cyclone Vardah, slum-dwellers, under-bridge dwellers and the fisherfolk bore the brunt. They must be given relief on priority. A natural calamity brings out the finer side of people. They become altruistic and practise the virtue of sharing with the needy. The locals feel a sense of humanity in the face of adversity.
