This refers to the editorial, “Strengthening an alliance” (February 12). The BJP has to undertake urgent course-correction measures with its allies. All core issues have to be thrashed out amicably, especially when elections to some crucial States are due this year and later. While grievances of the alliance partners have to be redressed amicably, NDA constituents must not openly air their complaints and go to town with their problems.
Mutual confidence and trust are the key factors to foster a healthy alliance. Since the Opposition is waiting to cash-in on open bickering between the NDA partners, it would be ideal if the BJP and its allies meet periodically, to discuss and dwell on burning issues. All NDA leaders should be asked to restrain their cadres from running amok with their loose comments. In hindsight, without displaying any arrogance, the BJP should politely let the partners know that with numbers it can go alone; but the need to forge an alliance was to thwart any nefarious design of the Congress.
