Must be circumspect

Sir — This  refers to the article, “long-term gain must be the aim” (June 18) by Abhijit Iyer-Mitra and J Jeganaathan. It is futile to expect any change in the policy of the new Government of Pakistan vis-à-vis India. It hardly matters who is in power, whether it is Nawaz Sharif, Asif Ali Zardari, Imran Khan, or a military dictator. Each and every gentleman talks of building bridges when not in power. They come to India and paint a rosy picture of friendly relations between the two countries. But this vanishes into thin air when they come to power. This is what the history of the last 65 years reveals. The lesson for India: Be friendly but circumspect.
