This refers to the article, “This is not just Nigeria’s problem” (May 12) by Sonam Mittal. The silence of the Islamic world over the barbarism of Boko Haram militants in Nigeria is troubling. Even the kidnapping of the schoolgirls and the threat to “sell” them off has failed to stir the Muslim world’s conscience.
The new militant-jihadi role which has emerged for women, has shocked the world. Tunisian women reportedly went off to Syria to sexually ‘comfort’ the rebels fighting there. Many of them came back pregnant. The matter was admitted by Tunisia’s Foreign Minister lotfi ben Jeddou in the Syrian National Constituent Assembly in 2013.
Compare this with the concern of the Islamic world over the attack on Bangladeshi Muslims in Assam. The expression Boko Haram means ‘Western education is sin’. But the modern destructive weapons, discovered by Western scientists, which these extremists use against non-believers, are not sin to them!
