Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Nationalist to the core” (January 8). Mufti Mohammed Sayeed was inarguably one of the most recognised Kashmiri politicians of India. Throughout his career, he strove for conciliation in the conflict-torn State of Jammu & Kashmir.
The Mufti’s party, the Peoples Democratic Party, focused on providing an alternative to Kashmiris at the regional level and to improve the security situation in the valley.
His other objective was to resume dialogue between India and Pakistan, and between the Government in Delhi and the separatists. Today, his party is finely ensconced in that secular space. That is his legacy.
