Sir — Professor Dinesh Singh was selected as the Vice Chancellor of Delhi University by the President of India on the basis of his academic credentials and outstanding achievements as Director, South Campus, Adjunct Professor, University of Houston, as well as for being an internationally-acclaimed mathematician. In his individual capacity as Director, Mathematical Sciences Foundation also, his innovative and path-breaking initiatives to nurture and help students through workshops, seminars and internship programmes, and prepare them for board exams through a helpline on telephone and through the electronic media, are still fondly remembered by the thousands associated with him.
The semester system introduced by the DU also faced opposition by some disgruntled teachers who, despite drawing hefty salaries, wanted to avoid additional responsibility. The FYUP was yet another initiative to help in the overall development of the students through skills and knowledge to enhance their employability in accordance with the thought process of our new Prime Minister. It was launched in 2013 after following the prescribed process of approval by the Academic Council and the Executive Council.
It is the responsibility of the teachers to abide by the lawful decisions of the DU. However, the aggression by a bunch of disgruntled teachers, against the management, should be deemed as indiscipline and liable for punishment. These individuals as well as the political parties are only vitiating the atmosphere by protesting and even physically assaulting their gurus. The students are in the university to study and they have no business to create politics and trouble.
