More public schools will serve a larger purpose

This refers to the editorial, “Revamping education” (May 18). A recent study by Assocham has revealed that more than 5,500 business schools in the country are producing unemployable graduates. This casts a light on how private educational institutions are mushrooming due to lack of Government participation and control. Sky-rocketing tuition fees come with archaic educational infrastructural facilities. Since educational scholarship is not enough to meet the demands, parents are forced to cough up a new form of dowry (educational) if they want to settle their wards. This negative discrimination is destroying the democratic environment and social mobility of our country.

As a first step, it needs to be ensured that meritorious students get higher education without any economic roadblock. It is time to do away with the huge chunk of management quota from the backyard of educational institutions. The need of the hour is to set up more public schools and colleges that can give private educational institutions a run for their money.
