Modi-Trump warmth is here to stay long

This refers to the editorial, “Warm-up conversation” (January 27). The Donald Trump-Narendra Modi conversation coming so soon should sound alarm bells in Pakistan because US President Donald Trump has not cosied up to Pakistan as much as the latter might have wanted him to. That Trump chose to call Modi ahead of Moscow, Beijing and Tokyo indicated his eagerness to build strong relations with New Delhi. Trump's soft corner for India was evident by the kind words he showered towards the Indian people in general and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in particular in his campaign speeches.

Continuity and enhancement should now be the aim of both leaders. India should not allow the steady momentum of goodwill and trust built between Modi-Obama slip away. New Delhi should ignore the strong anti-Trump rhetoric prevailing in parts of the world. For India, Trump is a US President and, obviously, one of the strongest leaders of the world. Just as Trump looks India as a friend and partner, India has to view America with hope and confidence.
