Sir — This refers to lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan looking visibly upset over questions being raised on her bipartisanship. The incident reminds one of similar episodes — for instance, then Vice President M Hidayatullah, on being repeatedly interrupted by a senior Rajya Sabha member, had rushed into his chamber with tears in his eyes and wrote his resignation letter. Other members pleaded with him and stopped him from taking the drastic step.
Ms Mahajan has proved to be an admirable Speaker. She has been firm in conducting lok Sabha proceedings from the day she took over.
Several unwanted activities have been witnessed in the proceedings of Parliament and the State Assemblies. lawmakers get away by misusing the immunity they have for their conduct in the House. This protection must be taken away. Only then will our parliamentarians keep a check on their behaviour.
