Sir — This refers to the editorial, “The pilgrim’s progress’’ (January 18). With the withdrawl of the Haj subsidy, the Modi Government has vindicated its stand of ‘development of all and appeasement of none.’ After excluding the company of a male member (Mehram) accompanying a female for Haj, this is the second major step by the Modi Governement in doing away with previous regimes’ policy of appeasement, which was meant to garner Muslim votes. How ironical it is that while an old and infirm gets subsidy for Haj, but the same person is never entitled for subsidy in a hospital anywhere in the country. It is true that no rule or law can gladden everybody, so is this rule, but majority of the Muslims have extolled it.
