Military supremacy

Sir — This refers to the article, “Sharif’s ouster: Democracy and CPEC weakened” (August 8) by Sandhya Jain. The ouster of Nawaz Sharif may weaken the democracy of Pakistan but it is unlikely to affect the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). The Army, which has the real power in Islamabad, is sure to ensure the success of CPEC.

Despite slowdown, Chinese companies are to benefit from CPEC and so investment will continue. Meanwhile, even if Nawaz Sharif was in power, it was unlikely that he could change the outcome of Kulbhushan Jadhav’s case because the decision to hang him or not does not rest with the judiciary or the Prime Minister of that country.
