Sir — This refers to the article, “Spooked clerics cry vendetta” (October 18) by Shreya Kedia. The British rulers, though considering India as a uniform category, felt the need for laws based on religions for administrative purpose. So, they took the task of codification of local customs and traditions; Hindus were administered under the Hindu Civil Code, and the Mohammadan Civil Code was applied to the Muslims.
Thus, the relationship between women and laws was determined by local customs. This misadventure sowed the seeds of divide and rule. The problem is that our rulers do not intellectually, but instinctively, follow the West. Such a state of mind cannot help us abolish the medieval culture of triple talaq.
