Mediation has its use, but not in rape cases

Published on:
This refers to the editorial, “No place for mediation” (June 30). I fully agree with the views that, if convictions in rape cases are sought to be diluted through the mechanism of mediation, it will send a wrong message. Already, the conviction rate in our country is low in rape crimes. For lack of evidence, the accused get freed. Add to it the prolonged time it takes for judicial verdicts, and the police inaction which is seen in many cases. These compound the situation in favour of the accused.
What is the guarantee that the accused will not commit the same crime thereafterIJ  Also this will set a wrong precedent. It will send a wrong signal to both men and women. It will not also be a solution to minimising the crime rate. Most importantly, such mediations will be a mockery of justice. The judiciary has to deliver punishment to criminals and not give them relief.
