Matter of choice

Sir — This refers to the order promulgated by the Madhya Pradesh Government, mandating students of all State-run schools to answer their roll calls with Jai Hind. This, to instill patriotism among the students. The order, to say the least, is dictatorial and autocratic. How can one instill a sense of patriotism among the children or for that on anyone by the use of forceIJ

By merely saying Jai Hind, can anyone be termed ‘patriotic’IJ  Patriotism is something which cannot be imposed; it must come naturally. And why should leaders test the patriotic instinct in the peopleIJ Are those, who impose such rules, patriotic in the first placeIJ If so, let them exhibit by remaining straightforward, not indulging in corruption, providing people-friendly rule, creating an atmosphere of amity and friendship.

Each and every citizen of the country is patriotic; may be one  does not express his/her patriotism outwardly. Take for example, the matches — be it cricket, foot ball or any other sport — being played by India versus any other country. Everyone who watches the match cheers whenever Indian players hit/decimate the other team. When Indians go down, the spectators express their grief.

If this is not patriotism, then what is itIJ One does not have to definitely wear patriotism on one’s sleeve to prove his/her patriotic credentialsIJ
