Manmohan Singh let himself be insulted

This refers to the editorial, “Cat is truly out of the bag” (April 14). The revelations in Sanjaya Baru's book, The Accidental Prime Minister: The Making and Unmaking of Manmohan Singh, have not surprised anyone, because it was an open secret that Mr Manmohan Singh's remote-control lay with Ms Sonia Gandhi.

The book has vindicated our worst fears that the Congress president was in charge of the Government, thereby leaving the all-important Prime Minister's post compromised. What is news for us is that Mr Singh had at least tried to put his foot down, exasperated by the turn of events, by offering to resign during UPA1. Maybe, later, tired by the consistently hovering eyes, he had to resign to his fate.

The situation suited Ms Gandhi well since she went on to wield real authority sans any accountability. Therefore, her act of ‘sacrificing' prime ministership should be seen as an attempt to wrest more power and act as a backroom manipulator.
