Manipur Government has dragged Imphal impasse

Published on:

This refers to the editorial, “Resolve Manipur crisis” (December 21). The crucial north-eastern State is boiling, thanks to an ineffective State Government and an adamant ethnic group. What could have been a smooth administrative decision, has been dragged beyond control by the two stakeholders. The State has sharply polarised into ethnic and territorial conflicts. The State Government appears to have done little to break the impasse.

Apparently, the Congress Government, led by Okram Ibobi Singh, is resorting to the ‘time will take its course’ theory which is dangerous for the north-eastern State. Of course, the adamant attitude of the United Naga Council (UNC) cannot be disputed, and it is in this context that the Centre’s role in solving the imbroglio assumes significance. The NDA Government should take its ‘Act East’ policy to a new level to inspire the much-needed confidence and hope among the harrowed citizens of Manipur. It is incumbent upon the Centre and the State to call the UNC to the talking table to end people's hardship.
