This refers to the report, “Bhagwat’s quota review advice triggers debate” (September 22). Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat’s call for a review of the reservation policy makes sense. Quotas have become tool for vote-bank politics. The ultimate goal of the political parties is power. That is why no political party can afford to oppose reservation and even the BJP has distanced itself from Mr Bhagwat’s call.
Beneficiaries of these reservations belong to the upper strata of the reserved categories rather than the socially and economically backward sections. Reservations can neither be an expanding phenomenon nor eternal. There is a strong case for review of the existing reservation policy.
