Sir — This refers to the report, “What is the roadmap to ensure peace in J & KIJ Cong asks Modi” (June 21). It is a funny situation wherein the party that created the Kashmir problem and which has not been able to bring peace in the Valley during its rule at the Centre is now questioning the present Government about the roadmap to peace. The Congress’s misadventures in the Valley have brought Kashmir to a stage where it has now become the worst problem that India is currently facing.
A suitable mix of diplomacy and toughness of attitude seems to the only solution. On the Kashmir front, Congress’s first befriending Sheikh Abdullah in the backdrop of not seeing eye to eye with Maharaja Hari Singh and then putting Abdullah in prison a few years later is a clear example of its flawed policy when it comes to dealing with the region. The Congress must also answer the question of how the application of Article 370 in Jammu & Kashmir gets along with the party’s much trumpeted idea of a united India. The Congress must introspect its own record.
