Madhesis must adopt a give-and-take attitude

Published on:

This refers to the editorial, “Resolving Nepal crisis” (December 22). Since the Nepal Government has agreed to amend the Constitution to placate the Madhesis, the Madhesi parties should call off their agitation and end the long-standing impasse in the country. Madhesi agitation has crippled truck services along the India-Nepal border, resulting in shortage of essential supplies to Nepal.

Also, no amendment to the new Constitution can fully satisfy all parties. There should be a spirit of give-and-take. The Madhesis are dissatisfied with the new provision that allows proportionate representation and population-based representation of seats; they expect more in the upper House.

India, which is seen as a strong supporter of the Madhesis, should use all resources at its command to send a subtle message to the Madhesi parties that the ongoing agitation in Nepal is essentially between the Nepal Government and the Madhesis, and not between India and Nepal.
