Sir — This refers to the editorial, “US should gun for guns” (October 4). The American dilemma on guns has a historical background, when Europeans, including the British, invaded the Americas about 500 years ago and decimated the local people called ‘Red Indians’ by nothing but the gun. Therefore, the gun culture is embedded in the psyche of the settlers and their progeny.
Recently, to face the Muslim refugees in Europe from Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria, the residents of some European countries started buying guns to protect themselves. Going back perhaps to the origin of Abrahamic faiths, their scriptures prescribe violence against genteels, heathens and kafirs. This is undeniable. Unless the world welcomes and accepts the sane teachings of Indic faiths ie, vasudhaiva kutumbakam, Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah, Ahimsa Paramo Dharmah, violence will continue.
