lessons Pakistan must learn from the attack

This refers to the editorial, “Attack on liberal tradition” (January 21). Peshawar  is in pain again with yet another terror attack on an educational institution. The only difference between the present attack at Bacha Khan University and that of the strike on the Army Public School in December 2014, is the age of the students. It is shameful that the Pakistan Taliban have insulted the memory of Bacha Khan or Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan with the brutal assault on an institution named after him. Pakistan needs the tolerant politics of Bacha Khan, who had led a successful non-violent movement against the British. This also earned him the nickname of ‘Frontier Gandhi’.

The recent attack at Bacha Khan University is a confirmation of Pakistan's claim that it is as much a victim of terrorism as India. It would appear that modern Pakistan is caught between the two Talibans — one based in Afghanistan, and the other the Tehreek-e-Taliban — the homegrown one. As a sovereign state, it is entirely up to Pakistan to draw the right lesson from this tragedy.
