leaders must act on President's advice

This refers to the report, “Prez pitches for debate, not disruption” (February 24). It is really unfortunate that disruption of parliamentary affairs seems to be the order of the day, so much so that even the First Citizen of this country, in his traditional address to a joint session of Parliament, expressed his dismay and extended his sage suggestion to Members of Parliament for the smooth and constructive conduct of parliamentary business.

President Pranab Mukherjee's observation that debate and not disruption is the only way out of the logjam, is on the mark. MPs are representatives of the people and are elected to the highest institution of democracy with the hope that will address problems. However, in the case of an impasse, it is the people who face the brunt, even as there is a huge loss of public money. Hence, it will be in the nation’s interest and also good for both the ruling party and the Opposition to end the stand-off, let Parliament function and allow the passage of crucial Bills. The President's advice must be acted upon.
