law prevails

Sir — The Sessions Court in Mumbai had announced an exemplary verdict against Bollywood actor Salman Khan after 13 prolonged years. It was a big win for the homeless people on the streets for whom the film industry and its celebrities have scant regard. Salman Khan would have been behind the bars now but for the relief that he has got from the High Court, which stayed his sentence on Friday.

One can argue whether the High Court took the right decision or not, but the victims and their families have nothing to celebrate. Regardless of the stay on the punishment, the Sessions Court’s verdict should be a lesson for the high and mighty that money cannot buy justice. Salman Khan may be out for now, but he remains a convict for the moment. He has a long legal battle ahead before the hit-and-run case, in which a man lost his life, comes to a closure.
