landmark verdict

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Battle won, war remains” (August 23). In a historic and landmark judgement, the Supreme Court has banned the controversial practice of triple talaq which allowed Muslim men to divorce their wives instantly pronouncing the word talaq three times. It comes as a relief for several Muslim women who have suffered the agony at the hands of their husbands. The court has ruled the practice unconstitutional which also goes against the basic tenets of the Quran.

After this sort of divorce, the agony suffered by women to eke out a living cannot be imagined by someone else. Women have been  divorced over the phone, through letters and even via social networking sites. Thanks to the recent verdict by the apex court, this law has gone after seventy years of independence. This paves way for gender equality not only in a religious circle but in the whole society too. I salute all the five women who petitioned to the apex court and saw the case through until victory.
