Kovind has potential to be a good President

This refers to the editorial, “Presidential qualities” (July 21). Ram Nath Kovind, who has been elected as next President of India, is a simple and knowledgeable person, someone who enjoys cordial relations across political parties. He is also known for his non-confrontational working style and always goes by the rule-book. He was the one instrumental behind Bihar's liquor ban and he ensured all parties rallied behind Nitish Kumar's move. The fact that he does not own any property and that he donated his ancestral home for community service, speaks a lot about his personality. He will assume responsibility at a time of fast changing social and economic environment. Now, since he has mentioned about his community’s and their conditions in his first speech after the victory, I am sure he will work towards their causes and uphold the Constitution.

Though comparison with Pranab Mukherjee would be inevitable, it would not be justified. Mukherjee became the President after spending more than four decades in public life and knew the intricacies of various administrative and constitutional matters. But I am sure that Kovind will be able to take the legacy of his predecessor forward in earnestness, and in the process develop his own unique style.
