Know your NOTA

Sir — This refers to the article “The power of NOTA and the Indian voter” by A Surya Prakash (January 2). In the recent Gujarat assembly election, NOTA proved its intense power in extending a stern warning to all political parties. BJP’s fiasco in the recent RK Nagar by-election, where it polled less that NOTA ballots, undeniably corroborates the political prudence of the voters.

However, due to lack of proper education and political immaturity, a substantial number of our people are still unaware of the relevance of NOTA. The practice of nominating influential candidates for Assembly/Parliamentary elections by political parties, despite their dubious integrity or blemished backgrounds, can be restrained to some significant extent by exercising the NOTA option.

Many of our lawmakers, especially from film/sports background, are apathetic to the affairs of the country and are primarily engaged in their lucrative businesses, neglecting the interests of their constituency as well as the nation. Voters can effectively oust such undesirable candidates by opting for NOTA. Citizens, particularly youngsters, are indeed attracted towards these luminaries due to their performances on the screen or in the field without knowing much about their ability and desire to serve the people. Enhanced political awareness among voters on the importance of NOTA is crucial.
