Killer roads

This refers to the editorial, “Road safety isn’t a luxury” (July 10). Indeed, road safety is not about luxury, as a slew of traffic accidents have failed to hog the headlines. Also, many such incidents go unreported. This is because people in India have got used to road accidents and including fatal ones.

It is only when a nationally-famed celebrity bears the brunt that the media takes notice. last year, a Union Minister lost his life in a road accident and that led to the matter of road safety getting top priority. But now, the issue seems to have been put on the back-burner.

Perhaps, the level of public awareness about the observance of traffic rules is not that high in our country. Note that there are few traffic policemen posted on national highways. Road accidents should be addressed as a public health issue.
