Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Naga peace threatened” (May 5). After a long time, peace in Nagaland and its neighbouring regions has been disturbed. The spate of violent incidents in recent months is a cause for concern. The National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Khaplang)’s wings must be clipped. Group leader SS Khaplang has re-invigorated his ‘Greater Nagaland’ demand, after being marginalised by the Government of India. Also, he is moving closer to Myanmar. This does not portend well for India.
Mr Khaplang’s ‘Greater Nagaland’ demand threatens the socio-political fibre of Indian democracy. So far, the Government has done well in its efforts to integrate the North-East into the Indian mainstream. However, it has to do a careful balancing act to stem the violent ways of the NSCN(K). It should shed any bias towards splinter groups of the NSCN(K). Additionally, India has to actively engage Myanmar in bilateral efforts to end the long-standing Naga problem.
