Kedarnath reconstruction: Truth must prevail

Published on:

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has accused the erstwhile UPA Government that it did not let him rebuild the Kedarnath temple after it was ravaged by the 2013 floods. Modi, Chief Minister of Gujarat in 2013, has lamented that the UPA Government at Centre  pressurized the Uttarakhand Government to decline the request of Gujarat government for reconstruction of the temple. Congress has rebutted the charge. The party has claimed that it had sanctioned Rs 8,000 crore in December 2013 for reconstruction activities and out of the said amount, a sum of Rs 2,200 crore is said to have been released in May 2014. Charges and counter-charges in political speeches especially at a time when election is round the corner are not rare. People cannot understand the veracity of the truth unless a full-fledged debate is conducted. Since the accusation has come from no less a person than the Prime Minister, the matter must engage the attention of electronic and print media. The Congress has released statistics to buttress its claim that it had not lagged behind in taking initiative to reconstruct the Kedarnath temple. Records speak truth. Truth must prevail.
