Kashmir mess

Published on:

Sir — Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s contention that the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits took place when Mr Jagmohan was Governor of the State, may be outwardly a fact, but this argument is both misleading and mischievously calculated not only to discredit Mr Jagmohan but also to hoodwink the people. A study of Kashmir’s history post-1947 will show that nobody has damaged Kashmir more than the Abdullah family. Accusing Mr Jagmohan does not absolve the family of creating a political mess in Kashmir.

The fact remains that between 1984 and 1989, the law and order situation in the State, where the National Conference-Congress combine was in power, indicated that worse days were to come for the people. Jagmohan or no Jagmohan, there was no other choice for the frightened Kashmiri Pandits but to leave the State in the mid and late eighties in order to protect their lives and honour.
