Sir — This refers to the news report, “Anarchist retreats with pyrrhic victory” (January 22). We may be critical of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s dharna demanding action against certain Delhi Police officials.
But the unusual chain of command of the police is responsible for the situation. Delhi Police is not under the control of the Government of Delhi but under the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, while law and order is the Delhi Government’s call.
The highly politicised Indian police force is known for its loyalty to its political masters rather than to the people. It often harasses law-abiding citizens, overlooks crime and protects criminals.
Due to a lack of political will, recommendations on police reforms are gathering dust. This is despite the Supreme Court’s directives to implement them.
The Chief Minister’s dharna may be the first glimpse of the participatory democracy that the Aam Aadmi Party has promised.
