Sir — This refers to the article, “law does catch up, and with VIP offenders too” (October 14) by A Surya Prakash. It is a fact that transparent governance in a democratic set-up cannot be possible without the rule of law and accountability. Politicians with dishonest intent and corrupt motives will not only ruin the spirit of democracy but also bankrupt the country.
How can we accept that J Jayalalithaa, the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, is an honest and popular leader when she has been convicted by the courtIJ It is absurd of some of her sycophants to unleash sporadic violence in the State.
Barring these people, almost everyone has welcomed the court’s ruling. Undoubtedly, the landmark verdict of the Supreme Court, striking down the Section 8(4) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, was judicious. However, it took the apex court 62 years to strike down the provision. It should have done so earlier.
