Sir — It is good that the Supreme Court has proposed the names of two senior advocates as judges for the apex court where, till now, the practice was to elevate Chief Justices of High Courts. There have been just four exceptions out of a total 210 appointments.
The new Union Government must implement the idea of former Union Minister for law and Justice Arun Jaitley to raise the retirement age of High Court judges to 65 years and bring it on par with that of Supreme Court judges. This will prevent lobbying by High Court judges to be elevated to the apex court. Also, post-retirement jobs for judges of higher courts must be banned, except for a retired Chief Justice of India being appointed as the head of the National Human Rights Commission.
