Sir — This refers to the article, “Education must acculturate” (April 2) by JS Rajput. Educational institutions are the modern secular temples where human values are to be nurtured. As a matter of fact, we must not indulge in any sort of sexual harassment or ragging anywhere in our country, let alone those sacred places. It is indeed impossible to keep a check on incidents of rape, molestation and stalking so long as we cannot ensure quick justice delivery system and as long as we keep pampering machismo.
It is unfortunate that actions and utterances of some of our political leaders bear testimony to our pampering regressive machismo that wants to project human beings as primitive gender animals like baboons. This made one of our political leaders say, “Rape accused should not be hanged. Boys make mistakes.” Another political heavyweight commented on rape that it was sometimes right and sometimes wrong — while another one went on to say that both the boy and the girl should be punished in a rape case. We need continuous movements to press the demand for a quick justice delivery system that can make every place free from violence and sexual harassment.
