It pays to be wary

Sir — This refers to the article, “Hit the enemy where it hurts the most” (May 7) by Sandhya Jain. The recent incursion of Chinese troops into Indian territory was a well-thought out move, aimed at browbeating India and forcing it to stop its military build-up at the line of Actual Control.

Bearing in mind the provocations of the past, we must never ignore the fact that Beijing can never be trusted and should at all times be viewed with a healthy dose of suspicion. India’s only option is to adopt a strong approach to counter China’s aggressive militarism. Besides the Tibet issue, New Delhi must also raise the matter of violation of human rights of Uighur Muslims in Xinjiang Province.

Another good strategy would be to forge stronger ties and join hands with Japan, South Korea, Vietnam and the Philippines to counter Beijing’s nefarious designs of encircling India. By banning cheap Chinese imports, New Delhi can boost and promote its own small industries and check the flow of Indian money to a country inimical to India and its sovereignty.
