This refers to the editorial, “More feathers in ISRO cap” (June 24). The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has made us proud again. But there is a lot to change than to cheer. ISRO is in the advent of developing more critical technologies such as the Geosynchronous Satellite launch Vehicle and Space Shuttles which requires increased monetary support. Also, the Government must increase budgetary allocations to the ISRO. Private sector participation can invigorate the space technology base in India.
Moreover, we must shift the focus from developing cheap or cost-effective technology to high-end, innovative and exclusive critical technologies to match the performance of space leaders like the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. The Mass Orbiter Mission was just a ‘technology demonstration' mission, and not a high-end space venture to study the Mars. This requires increased investment and scientific know-how from both the public and private sectors.
